Abstract
Scrap of a proof of the first stanza of the poem. Originally written in July 1918 at St Venant. Corrections in blue pencil are just visible above the tear line. Published in 'Picture-Show' (1919). The 'Dug-Out' was based on how Siegfried Sassoon's fellow officer 'Jowett' looked while he was asleep.
