H.') / describes his friends gifts and predictions as to what he might have become had he lived / unable to work / talks about living in times where 'good' battles 'evil' / the responsibilities of artists / death / praises the courage of his battalion / reliance on comradeship in war / the pride, courage and courtesy of French civilians. [F.W. Harvey, it was to be discovered shortly afterwards, had not been killed but had been captured on 17 August, seeing out the remainder of the war in prison camps.]
