Abstract
The poem refers to a holiday spent by Edward Thomas and his family with the American poet Robert Frost while he was staying in Herefordshire in August 1914. The occasion is probably the receipt of a letter from Frost on 21 May 1916 after a long silence. The manuscript is untitled but is labeled 'The sun used to shine' in 'Edward Thomas Collected Poems'.
