Abstract
This is the first poem known to have been written by Isaac Rosenberg after his enlistment in October 1915." Beside the poem, turned 90 degrees, Rosenberg has written in pencil ""Pte. I Rosenberg / 24520 / A Coy 12th 5th Lancs / Alma Bks / Blackdown camp"" He forwarded a draft, now in the Berg Collection, to the poet Lascelles Abercrombie at the behest of Edward Marsh, editor of 'Georgian Poets', as well as to Sydney Schiff. The poem was eventually published in 'Moses', and Rosenberg sent a copy his friend John Rodker and to Ezra Pound; both then forwarded it to Harriet Monroe, editor of 'Poetry', who published 'Marching...' along with 'Break of Day in the Trenches' in 'Poetry' in Dec. 1916.
